Are You Languishing?

I attended a zoom call with author Adam Grant & Olympian Abby Wambach earlier this month, sponsored by USOPF. I was invited (along with countless others) because I’ve been a supporter of US Olympic teams for many years.
It was a brilliant discussion on building resilience and of course this is an important topic as many of us are still affected by the pandemic, working from home and not getting the interaction that we had in the years before. Some of the initial points were from an athlete’s point of view but they can apply to all of us.
I’ve talked to several people since January and it seems to be common to not have quite the drive you had before the pandemic; maybe feeling a bit aimless, a bit less joyous. This is called languishing. The whole world came to a halt and it is harder for people to feel like they are moving forward.
I think the point for us is we need to instill a sense of movement towards our goals, both personal and for our employees and project teams. What are the small wins that we can celebrate? When you have that sense of accomplishment you get more excited, more involved in the work. It’s a bit harder to get that flow when interrupted by life at home.
Just talking about how you feel with someone can help. It’s easier to talk about data than emotions, but perhaps it’s time to expand the conversation. Make it a topic for your next meeting.

The Olympics are just days away. Support Team USA!
